How to download an Instagram Reel

In the Instagram app, open the Reel, tap the paper-plane share icon beneath it and choose "Copy link." It works the same wherever the Reel lives — a profile's Reels tab, the Reels feed, or a Reel reshared to someone's grid. On the web, open the Reel and copy the URL straight from your browser's address bar instead.

Paste that link into the box at the top of this page and press Download. Usually within a few seconds you get the Reel as a single HD MP4 — one link, one file, with nothing to configure and no account to create.

On a computer or an Android phone the MP4 lands in your Downloads folder. On iPhone, Safari saves it through the share sheet into the Files app rather than directly to your camera roll — open Files, tap the MP4 and choose "Save Video" to move the Reel into Photos.

What you get: one HD MP4, with audio

A Reel comes down as a clean MP4 in the best quality Instagram served, which for most Reels is up to 1080p. It is the source file, not a screen recording, so there is no quality loss and no re-encoding.

The original audio — voiceover, dialogue or the trending track — stays inside the file, because the MP4 is the complete clip Instagram stored. There is no separate audio-only or MP3 button and no quality menu to choose from; the tool simply grabs the best single version available.

It also will not produce a 4K or WebM file. Reels are not published in those formats, so an HD MP4 is genuinely the best version there is to fetch.

The truth about "no watermark" Reels

A public Reel's source file has no watermark in it to begin with. What stamps a logo and username onto a clip is Instagram's own in-app download button, which re-renders the Reel with that overlay burned in.

This tool pulls the original source instead, so you get the clean file. It is not stripping or removing a mark — there is nothing baked into the source to strip. That is the honest meaning of "no watermark," and it is the main reason to use a web downloader over Instagram's built-in save.

The native reel button also appears only on some public Reels and only inside the app. A web tool works on the desktop too and returns the same clean MP4.

Which Reel links work

Any standard Reel URL works: the short reel links (instagram.com/reel/…), Reels opened from a profile's Reels tab, and Reels that were also posted to a feed as a regular post (instagram.com/p/…). Both the share menu's "Copy link" and your browser's address bar give you a URL in the right shape.

A bare username or an "@handle" will not work — a link-paste tool needs an actual Reel link, not just the account name. Links copied from inside other apps that add tracking or redirects can occasionally choke, so if a paste fails, open the Reel in a normal browser and copy the clean instagram.com URL.

Why a Reel download fails

The most common reason is that the Reel is not public. Reels on private accounts, or anything you can only see while logged in, are not served to the open web, so no legitimate tool can fetch them. Any site claiming to grab private Reels is either overpromising or fishing for your Instagram password, which you should never enter.

Deleted, taken-down, region-locked or age-gated Reels also fail, because the link resolves to nothing. If a Reel that should be public will not download, the usual culprit is a stale or edited URL — copy a fresh link straight from Instagram and confirm the Reel still opens in a browser without logging in.

Frequently asked questions

Do Instagram Reels download with sound?+

Yes. Every Reel saves as a complete MP4 with its original audio — voiceover, dialogue or the trending track — because you get the whole source clip, not a muted or re-recorded version.

Can I download Instagram Reels without a watermark?+

Yes, because a public Reel's source file has no watermark in the first place. The tool fetches that clean original; the logo-and-username overlay you may have seen comes only from Instagram's in-app download button, which this avoids.

Can I save an Instagram Reel to my iPhone camera roll?+

Almost directly — on iPhone, Safari saves the MP4 into the Files app through the share sheet, not straight to Photos. Open Files, tap the downloaded Reel and choose "Save Video" to move it into your camera roll.

Can I get just the audio or the song from a Reel as an MP3?+

No. The tool downloads the full Reel as an MP4 with its audio inside; there is no separate MP3 or audio-only button. You get the complete video, not a standalone music file.

What quality are the downloaded Reels — can I get 4K?+

You get an HD MP4 in the best quality Instagram stored, usually up to 1080p. There is no 4K option because Reels are not published in 4K, and there is no quality menu — the tool always grabs the best available version.

Is it free, and do I need an app or an account?+

It is completely free and runs in your browser — no signup, no app and no extension. You paste one public Reel link and get one download.

Can I download private or close-friends Reels?+

No. Private and login-gated Reels are not available to the open web, so they cannot be fetched by this or any honest tool. SnapDownloader only works with public Reels and will never ask for your Instagram login.

Will the creator know I downloaded their Reel?+

No. Downloading a Reel does not notify the account, add a view beyond simply watching it, or require you to follow or log in.

Is it legal to download Instagram Reels?+

Saving public Reels for your own personal use is generally fine, but reposting or using someone's Reel commercially without permission can violate copyright. Credit the creator and get their okay before republishing.
