How engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacts with a post. The standard formula divides total engagements (likes, comments, and where they exist shares and saves) by a base number, then multiplies by 100. Which base you use matters: Instagram is usually measured against followers, while TikTok and YouTube are measured against views, because their feeds push content far beyond a creator's own followers.
This calculator uses the right base for each platform automatically. For a single post, plug in that post's numbers; for an account, use the average of your last 10–15 posts — one viral or flopped post skews the result. Reach-based rates (engagements ÷ reach) are the fairest per-post measure, but reach is not public, so follower- and view-based rates are what most tools and brands compare.
What counts as a good engagement rate
Benchmarks shift every year and by follower size — smaller accounts almost always out-engage large ones. As a rough 2026 guide: Instagram averages around 0.5% by followers, TikTok around 4.2% by views (about 2.6% by followers), and YouTube around 2% by views. At or above those is healthy; well above is excellent. Below roughly 60% of the average is worth investigating — often a content-fit or posting-time issue rather than a follower problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?+−
Around 0.5% is average by followers in 2026; 1% and up is strong. Smaller accounts (under ~10k) commonly see several percent, while very large accounts trend below 1% — so always compare within your follower tier.
How do you calculate engagement rate?+−
Add up the engagements (likes + comments, plus shares and saves where they exist), divide by the base — followers for Instagram, views for TikTok and YouTube — and multiply by 100. This tool does it for you and picks the right base per platform.
Why is my TikTok engagement rate different by views vs followers?+−
TikTok's feed serves videos to people who don't follow you, so views usually far exceed followers. By-views is TikTok's standard because it reflects real performance; by-followers can look higher but is less meaningful there.
Should I use one post or an average?+−
For an account, average your last 10–15 posts — a single viral or weak post distorts a one-post reading. For judging a specific post, use that post's own numbers.
Is it free?+−
Yes — completely free, instant, and no login. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere; the math runs in your browser.
